Best restaurants to have Christmas dinner this December 2018
Date Published : 10 Dec 2018

We recommend you to book your Christmas dinner early because it seems in Hong Kong, Christmas is a very out-and-about kind of deal of wine, dine and celebrations. And the restaurants in Hong Kong endorse that well with hundreds of exclusively Christmas menus all across town. So if you're going through a wee "which one should I book?" kind of dilemma, here are our choices of the best Christmas dinner spots this year, chosen by menu.

Hunter & the Chase
Hunter & the Chase is doing Christmas dinner the way it should be-- sharing family-style. The American Christmas dinner starts with French quail with black truffle and pan-seared foie gras with sour cherry preserves and caesar salad. The roast & grill section features the butterfly seabass fillet with spring onions, garlic and charred lemon, the roasted turkey breast with gravy, the USDA prime strip loin with horseradish creme fraiche and garlic puree, and the Australian lamb tomahawk with mint jelly and cumin yoghurt. Along with them, comes the sides of candied sweet potatoes (candied with marshmallow and brown sugar), sausage stuffing, sauteed spinach with mushrooms and garlic and buttery biscuits. The desserts include the cheddar crusted apple pie with whiskey caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream, the lemon meringue pie with a shortbread cookie crust, and the pumpkin pie with whipped cream. 3/F & 4/F, The L. Place, 139 Queen's Road Central, 2915 1638; hunterandthechase.com

Danish Chefs at Test Kitchen
Test Kitchen is bringing a Danish Christmas of salmon and pork belly to Hong Kong with an eight-course traditional Christmas feast. The menu starts off with Herring with Endive and Skyr, Shrimp Tartar, and Beetroot cured Salmon. And for something a little more heft-y, they're serving Crispy Christmas Pork Belly and Slow-cooked Duck served with sides of red cabbage with orange, crispy potatoes and more. The menu also features special cheese from Denmark such as the semi-hard Vesterhavsost and the elusive Blaa Kornblomst (we don't know much about this cheese, but we're intrigued). To finish the night they have Ris la Mande with Cherry Sorbet and a surprise dessert from the chef. Half the menu isn't familiar to us, and that really excites us! Definitely one of the most anticipated Christmas menus this year.158A Connaught Road West, Shop 3, Sai Ying Pun; 9032 7628; testkitchen.com.hk/danishchristmas2018

If you're not so into the pan-European Christmas food as we know it, you can opt for a Japanese Christmas dinner at FUMI. The new six-course Christmas dinner menu at FUMI is neither fried chicken nor the festive fixings we're accustomed to. It’s more reminiscent to a warm ryokan (Japanese hot springs) meal eaten on a cold winter’s day. Highlights include the grilled nanbu chicken with homemade teriyaki sauce in "Chikuzen" style and an oden featuring a Christmas touch of red konnyaku. Of course the whole meal is paired with a glass of sake (rather than a wine). Big Sur
It's Big Sur's first Christmas menu, since their opening early this year. They're doing it the Cali way with a three-course dinner menu featuring fajitas and meringue cake (or is it pie...?). The family style menu includes a Beef Brisket Caesar Salad, made with hickory smoked beef brisket, baby gem lettuce and grilled sourdough croutons. You can choose between the salad and the Prawn & Jalapeno Spring Rolls, stuffed with tiger prawns, cream cheese, pecorino, pepper jack, curry leaf, and cumin seeds. The DIY “Gua Bao” Roast Pork Fajitas was an intriguing choice for Christmas, so we're curious how that's going to turn out. The dessert seems like the real highlight of this menu, the Meringue Bombe comes with layers of vanilla ice cream, mandarin, orange, gingersnaps & pecan sponge cake. G/F, 22 Staunton Street, Soho; 2529 3001; bigsur.com.hk
Menu Availability: 10th - 23rd December 2018

TOWN is presenting a delicious “Christmas Around the World” dinner menu. The six-course menu will include dishes from around the world for you to feast on. It starts with Japan with the “Pipikaula” Uni, Sea Asparagus, Yuzu Kosho, with thinly sliced Rangers Valley Wagyu Sirloin in a tart white soy, wasabi, and sake kasu glaze, served with tamago and uni. The menu continues with Carabineros, Asari Clams, Miso, Crispy Parma Ham, where succulent Spanish red prawns are grilled on the Japanese binchotan grill, then served with garlic, butter and yuzu-soaked clams with crispy Parma ham. Meat lovers can enjoy Australian Roasted Quail, marinated in sherry wine and served with a smoky eggplant puree, white wine-simmered watermelon, and chicken broth; and the “Maruya” Tenderloin, Foie Gras, Preserved Matsutake, seared on the grill and topped with foie gras and wild mushrooms. As for seafood, they have the Lobster “Blue” White Asparagus, Pomelo-Cucumber, Onion Dashi. The dessert of the night will be the “Mont Blanc” Black Currant Jam, Vanilla Chestnut Cream Meringue with the traditional dessert of pureed chestnuts lightened with meringue and a refreshing blackcurrant sorbet. 10/F Cubus, 1 Hoi Ping Road, Causeway Bay, Hong Kong; 2568 8708; townrestauranthk.com

Gradini at The Pottinger
For a really dress-to-impress experience of white-table sheets, silverware and Victorian- esque lamps, we recommend Gradini Ristorante E Bar Italiano at The Pottinger. Gradini's got a different menu for both Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day. It's also one of the few romantic restaurants that actually look its best during the daytime, so if you're with family, opt for their Christmas Day brunch featuring a huge variety of festive mains including the pan-seared foie gras with raspberry balsamic, a 36-month San Daniele ham with Cantaloupe, slow-roasted lamb chop with barolo wine sauce and the grilled US prime sirloin with forest mushrooms gravy. If you're looking for a dinner menu, they've got a 5-course festive dinner menu starting with an appetiser of scampi with smoked cauliflower puree and three prestigious types of caviar. Continued with a main of slow-baked lamb loin wrapped in crisp-golden San Daniele ham and a dessert of crystal ball filled with apricot mousse, sponge cake and pistachio crust. Morton’s Steakhouse
And for a truly all-American Christmas dinner, Morton's  Steakhouse is raising the steaks with an elective Christmas menu. Starting with appetisers from their famous lobster bisque and shrimp cocktail to the Hong Kong favourite of jumbo lump crab cake. The entrees include the filet mignon with lobster and their prime centre cut ribeye, and for seafood lovers, the option for a whole baked main lobster (which must be ordered in advance). Sidedishes make the biggest difference in December, with fluffed up versions of their staples, from truffle cauliflower and brussel sprouts with bacon to horseradish mashed potatoes and parmesan & truffle fries. The dessert platter includes American favourites of key lime pie, cheesecake, chocolate mousse, creme brulee and a chocolate-dipped strawberry. You can also get the hot chocolate cake instead of the platter, but if you want to get real Christmassy we recommend the Christmas chocolate old-fashioned. The Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Fourth Level, 20 Nathan Road, Kowloon; 2732 2343; mortons.com/hongkong
Menu Availability: 24th, 25th, & 31st December 2018

Café on the PARK at the Royal Pacific Hotel
For those spending Christmas dinner with relatives, buffets might be a better choice. The Christmas themed buffet at Cafe on the Park features the Christmas roast turkey with an Asian twist, served with chestnut, glutinous rice and preserved meat as well as the traditional roast turkey with mixed dried fruits, nuts and gravy. And for those who aren't too keen for turkey, they will also be serving imperial crown lamb rack with mint and root vegetables, as well as US beef rib eye steak with Yorkshire pudding. Other Christmassy goodies include the traditional Christmas pudding with brandy sauce, Christmas log cake, stollen and Christmas-themed cookies. While the Christmas buffet is available throughout all of December, the 24th and 25th will be extra special for those with youngins, with Christmas carols, cotton candy and a visit from Santa Claus. 2/F, Hotel Wing, The Royal Pacific Hotel & Towers, China Hong Kong City, 33 Canton Road, Tsim sha tsui , Kowloon, 2738 2322; sino-hotels.com/hk/royal-pacific/en/hotel-restaurant-and-bar/cafe-on-the-park-hotel-buffet
