Hot new pasta dishes to try this summer
Date Published : 20 Jul 2017

Craving some pasta or looking for a nice Italian restaurant for a summery date? We've rounded up some of the best new pasta menus out this summer.

Pici
WOM recommends: Gnocchi with gorgonzola and walnut
Based in Wan Chai, Pici pasta bar is an urban oasis for lovers of freshly made pasta in Hong Kong. There is a real sense of street theatre where the masterful chefs perform in an open kitchen, while the audience sits under a lofty canopy of French windows. Their recently launched 3-course set lunch menu is a great way to sample what’s on offer, plus, it’s a steal (priced at $148 per person). Some signature dishes to watch out for include their lighter than air gnocchi with gorgonzola and walnut, and their hand rolled Pappardelle with beef ragu, followed nicely by a homemade Tiramisu or Panna Cotta to give you that afternoon boost. They don’t take reservations, so be sure to bring your friends early! WOM recommends: Pork & shrimp tortellini with spicy tomato sauce and cured fish roe
Long established Linguini Fini have kept us coming back to Soho with their authentic take on dishes plucked from the heart of Little Italy in New York. This summer they have unveiled a new a la carte menu, reintroducing some old favourites alongside some new additions that skillfully blend influences from Italy and Asia. Some quirky and fun lunch menu Items include their Typhoon Shelter Grab Linguini Fini featuring locally sourced crab, pickled chilli, black beans and a classic gremolata dressing. Their surf & turf option is another instant hit, consisting of Pork & Shrimp tortellini with spicy tomato sauce and cured fish roe (otherwise known as bottarga) that helps to season the dish. There are plenty of classics to enjoy alongside some East-West fusion plates to satisfy those with an adventurous spirit. 49 Elgin Street, Soho 2387 6338; linguinifini.comSi Simply Italian
WOM recommends: Eggplant Parmigiana

Si Simply Italian is set within a pared back minimal interior and brings a no fuss attitude, recently opened this spring, they specialise in using seasonal ingredients and in-house freshly prepared pasta. Standout dishes include their Egg Tagliolini with Sea Urchin. With a sea urchin and basil infused cream sauce, each bite of this dish is packed with flavours that will have you dreaming of the seaside. If you’re after something a bit different, Si’s Italian Eggplant Parmigiana might be up your street. This lasagna look-alike is actually made up of layers of thinly sliced eggplant, carefully overlaid with mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh basil, and served with a fresh tomato dressing. Invite your friends to a taste test, and see if they can spot the difference! Shop G03 G/F, D2 Place Two, 15 Cheung Shun Street, Cheung Shai Wan, Kowloon 2370 9022; sirestaurant.hkCheeky pasta
WOM recommends: Wham bam ginger creme sauce

Cheeky Pasta has been cooking up a storm with some exciting flavour combos from their quaint little venue on Swatow St. Among their menu options of wings and skin-on fries include some quirky pasta dishes that are worth checking out. Some top dishes include their signature cheeky special of spaghetti paired with Cream Pea Wasabi sauce and cherry tomatoes, which comes with a nice spicy kick. New to the menu is their spaghetti with Wham Bam Ginger Crème sauce, another Eastern inspired simple and satisfying pasta dish that will have you wondering why you haven’t tried this flavour combo sooner! Shop B2A, 4 Swatow Street, Wan Chai, 2325 2725; facebook.com/cheekypasta208 Duecento Otto
WOM recommends: Tagliolini conpolpo
e bottarga
208 Duecento Otto recently released ‘The Regional Series’, which highlights Italy’s regionally unique culinary culture by way of a 4-course sharing menu, focusing on a single region each month. Featuring in July is Sardinia, an island situated in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, known for their seafood and homemade staples. The menu includes Tagliolini con polpo e bottarga, freshly made pasta tossed with octopus, completed with gratings of bottarga (salt cured grey mullet roe, a household staple for preserving seafood in winter months). 208 Hollywood Road, 2549 0208; 208.com.hk
Fish roe spaghetti @ Operetta
WOM recommends: Spaghetti fish roe “carbonara” style

One Michelin-starred chef Luca de Berardinis is taking the helm at Operetta with a new seasonal menu this summer. Growing up on a farm in Italy’s Abruzzo region, he grew up appreciating the value of fresh produce. Luca de Berardinis is bringing family-style traditional Italian cuisine to Operetta. The new menu focuses on fresh bread, house-made pasta and fresh seasonal ingredients. Some pasta highlights include the spaghetti fish roe “carbonara” style with salmon roe, caviar, sea urchin and bottarga roe. We also recommend the tomato-less pappardelle with lamb ragout. Shop 112, Pacific Place 1/F, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, 2115 8080; operetta.hkRisotto @Cadenza
WOM recommends: Forest Mushroom Risotto Chanterelle (with black trumpet porcini, rocket and pecorino)

Cadenza used to be a type of speakeasy bar slash Italian restaurant hidden away in the end of Chinese restaurant Greater China Club. Candeza is paying tribute to its new executive chef this summer with a brand new Italian menu. We found the tasting menu to be more of Contemporary European in style, perhaps a change in Cadenza’s Trattoria style menu from before. The forest mushroom risotto chanterelle with black trumpet porcini, rocket and pecorino was an absolute delight, while the clams linguine, garlic, espelette pepper with baby shrimps were a lighter (but a little salty) alternative. D2 Place, Lai Chi Kok, 9 Cheung Yee St, Cheung Sha Wan, 2743 8055; greaterchinaclub.com
