La Tomatina: there are tomatoes to throw and tomatoes to eat
Date Published : 30 Aug 2017

La Tomatina, possibly the biggest food festival where the food isn't for eating. This Spanish festival kicks off with a gigantic tomato throwing food fight. Expect the splashes and the goo, but here in Hong Kong possibly the closest we can get to feeling that tomato anarchy is by eating tons of them.

There are tomatoes to throw and tomatoes to eat... And here are the ones you should eat. Tomato tartare @Ham & Sherry
Surely many people’s first choice for Spanish tomato-ey nosh. Ham & Sherry is doing a special menu to celebrate La Tomatina with small plates as cheap as HK$38! We’re talking squid gazpacho, tomato tartare,tomato tart and their very special gazpacho bloody mary. Their tomato tartare comes with smoked burrata, sherry vinegar and served with rustic bread. 1-7 Ship Street, Wanchai, 2555 0628; hamandsherry.hkZaalouk @LILYA
This one is heavenly, the zaalouk is a small plate of eggplant caviar, tomato and harissa. Ask for a basket of bread and that’s your dinner sorted. Summery, light and absolutely moreish, it's not just the cocktails that are bringing us back to LILYA. 77 Wyndham St, Central, 2526 2578; prawns with fish sauce in Hanoi style @Le Soleil
This one’s from Le Soleil’s new summer menu. Made with a special house-made fish sauce from Chef Do’s old family recipe, the dish also includes tomatoes, coconut milk, chilli and garlic, a blend that results in a delicate balance of spicy and tangy. Total comfort food. 3/F Royal Garden Hotel, 69 Mody Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui East, 2733 2033;

Butter chicken @Jashan
Who doesn’t like a proper butter chicken sometimes? Tomatoes play a huge part in many of our favourite curries, and Jashan knows their stuff. Tender and BIG pieces of chicken floating atop their sweet and tangy tomatoes & cream based curry. 1st floor, Amber Lodge, 23 Hollywood Road, Central, 3105 5300;
La Tomatina menu @Zafran
To celebrate La Tomatina, Zafran has conjured up a 4-course menu with tomatoes on the spotlight. The tuna belly & Spanish tomato salad, Valencian style paella and tarto de queso with tomato gelato are some of the tomato treats to look forward to. Basement 43-55 Wyndham Street. Central, 2116 8855;
