KFC x Beyond Meat: Kentucky Fried Chicken flies the coop with Beyond Fried Chicken

This is not a drill. Of all the fast-food chains, KFC have emerged as the first to jump on the plant-based ‘chicken’ train. Let’s hope it doesn’t have Colonel Sanders crawling up from six feet under.

Due to the increasing interest (and demand) for alternative meats, KFC has decided to go (infinity and) Beyond Meat and roll out plant-based but “still finger-lickin’ good” chicken nuggets and boneless wings [ed: so basically just oversized nuggets, right?].

Kevin Hochman, president and chief concept officer at KFC, has ambitiously proclaimed about the venture: “I think we've all heard 'it tastes like chicken' – well our customers are going to be amazed and say, 'it tastes like Kentucky Fried Chicken!’” Let’s just wait and see on that one, Kev.

While this is a massive step in the green direction for the world’s second-largest restaurant chain, don’t count your chickens before they hatch just yet, as Kentucky Beyond Fried Chicken is available for one day only (27 August), and at only one location up in Atlanta. But, there’s no doubt that if all goes well, it’s only a matter of time before you’ll be able to order your chicken without the chicken.

There’s no question that Hong Kong’s late to the sustainable eating game and a step like this might sound like a fool’s errand but still, we remain hopeful.
