WOM Guide’s suggestions for a romantic Valentine’s Dinner

That wallet-busting day, Valentine’s Day, is almost here and amidst all of the crazily priced menus in Hong Kong, we’ve created an exclusive list of those that are really worthy of your special someone, and your money.
Dear Lilly
Dear Lilly, the dreamy restaurant with interiors by Ashley Sutton, featuring velvet drapes and heart-shaped booths with a grand view of Victoria Harbour, is perfect for romantics. Its special five-course Valentine’s Day menu starts with Lobster bisque with brandy foam, followed by Pan-fried scallops with carrot puree, sturgeon caviar and pancetta crumbs. The two main courses include Fillet Rossini - USDA prime beef fillet with potato rosti, seared foie gras, winter black truffle and madeira glaze, and the Sumac and seaweed roasted salmon with pea puree and grilled asparagus. Finally the dessert, lovingly named Dear Lilly’s heart, a heart-shaped chocolate sponge cake with light strawberry mousse. The menu is priced at HK$1,298 per couple. For those who really want to vamp up the romance this year, take your date on a walk around the nooks and crannies of the historic Tai Kwun. From the arched corridors to the quieter alleyways there are lots of places for a cheeky smooch. One our favourite restaurants here is The Chinese Library, for its seven-course Valentine’s Day feast. The menu starts with a Dim sum platter of har gow, steamed black cod and egg dumpling, and seasonal mushroom dumpling. Followed by a Mandarin fish soup with peas and Chinese celery and a starter of Abalone with chilli consommé. Other highlights include, Sweet pumpkin with Iberico pork belly marinated with fermented bean curd, Wok-fried coral garoupa with carrot and spinach, and a dessert of Rice balls in ginger tea. The meal is paired with a glass of rosé and pink moscato. The menu is priced at HK$688 per person. Block 01, Tai Kwun, Police Headquarters, 10 Hollywood Rd, Central, 2848 3088; chineselibrary.com.hkCafe Gray Deluxe
An award-winning restaurant with breathtaking views, the Valentine’s Day four-course menu at Cafe Gray Deluxe starts with Seared tuna with garlic ponzu, oscietra caviar and seaweed oil. Followed by charred Patagonian toothfish with champagne froth and sweet potato-tangerine gnocchi. The main also features Coffee-rubbed short rib with smoked Sichuan pepper and baked turnip. The evening concludes with Strawberry pavlova with mascarpone mousseline and rose champagne sorbet, along with a selection of petits fours and chocolates. The menu is priced at HK$1,150 per person. Unrelated, but making for a good icebreaker conversation for potential couples is the restaurant’s bathroom, one of the most beautiful we’ve ever seen in Hong Kong. Level 49 The Upper House Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, 3968 1106; upperhouse.com/en/restaurants-bars/cafe-gray-deluxe
Gough’s on Gough
The Roaring Twenties meets pop-art, Gough’s on Gough is a gorgeously furnished modern-British restaurant with an eight-course “An Ode to Love” Valentine’s Day menu carefully prepared by head chef, Cary Docherty. Highlights include a gorgeous Terrine of foie gras served with trompettes de la mort (black trumpet mushrooms) and black truffles, and Roasted turbot with confit leeks, pomme puree and chive sauce. The menu concludes with an exquisite Truffled Tunworth cheese and Rhubarb donuts and custard. The menu is priced at HK$1,288 per person. 15 Gough St, Central, 2473 9066; goughsongough.comà nu retrouvez-vous
With only a handful of seats per evening, and stunning harbour views, this tiny restaurant at Ocean Terminal is an underrated gem for romantic dining. Intimate and exclusive, à nu retrouvez-vous is a French-Japanese restaurant specialising in Omakase dining, so while there is no special Valentine’s Day menu there will be many surprises. The final price depends on the dishes enjoyed, with an average spend (for food only) of around HK$1,580 per person. Shop OTE 402, 3-27 Canton Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2770 6222; anu.com.hk
