5 to try: The best under-the-radar noodle shops on Hong Kong island
06 May 2020
Summer’s (almost) in full swing but that doesn’t stop Hong Kongers from slurping a bowl of our favourite comfort food: noodles. The city is flooded with options left and right but there would always be a place in our hearts (and stomachs) for local spots that have stood the test of time. From cart noodles to authentic Tibetan flavours, here’s our pick of the best hidden noodle shops on the island.
前座飯堂 Chin Jor Fan Tong
Tucked away in the streets of buzzy Tai Hang, 前座飯堂 Chin Jor Fan Tong is a place that’s been stuck in time. Thanks to its 80s-inspired interior, you’ll feel as if you've been transported to another era. Tuck into their signature Ah Kam’s braised beef noodles (HK$78) with spicy beef tendons that just melt in the mouth swimming in a tangy broth that’s bursting with flavours. If beef isn’t your cup of tea, feel free to build your own bowl (prices from HK$45) and choose your own soup base, spice level and noodles.

青藏牛肉麵 Qinghai Tibetan Beef Noodles
It’s all in the name: For a taste of authentic Tibetan fare, longstanding North point spot 青藏牛肉麵 Qinghai Tibetan Beef Noodles is the place to be. This Kam Ping Street eatery only offers a handful of items but it has developed a cult following for their traditional and aromatic bowls. Their mutton noodle in soup (HK$48) with sinfully tender meat and hand pulled noodles of your choice (ramen or flat noodles) is unsurprisingly a best-seller.

It may be a bit of a splurge for a bowl but this perfectly-cooked and well-balanced dish makes it worth every penny. Add their signature fish slices on the side for a complete meal.

All hail marine royalty, 文輝墨魚丸大王 Man Fai for their dishes centred around one of Hong Kongers’ favourite seafood: cuttlefish. The Causeway Bay joint’s signature cuttlefish ball with rice noodles (HK$43) is the best comfort food any time of the day. Or tuck into their bowl of cuttlefish head with spinach noodle, if you dare.
