5 Christmas markets for the last-minute shopper in all of us
Date Published : 07 Dec 2017

There’s a New Year’s resolution in an old diary, dated 2012 or 2013 perhaps, declaring Christmas shopping to commence early that year, specifically in May. It quickly proved to be more ambitious than losing the pounds gained on Boxing Day, and I’ve since learned to embrace the part about Christmas shopping that is inevitably last-minute.

If you count yourself part of the club, these Christmas markets are still around for your would-be presents to make the cut. Pay attention to the dates, time and locations, mark your calendars, go!

Discovery Bay Sunday Market

QUICK: Sunday, 10 December, 11AM-6PM
Pastries and confectionary, handmade gifts, clothes, wines and spirits, beauty products and more will be found at Handmade Hong Kong’s Discovery Bay Sunday Market. Sift through the stalls for last-minute presents for loved ones; the sheer range means you there isn’t a person on your list you won’t be able to gift!

Christmas Gift Festival at the Conrad

QUICK: Sunday, 10 December, 10AM-6PM
Shop for all you might need to be gift-ready this Christmas, from clothes and jewellery to stationery and toys, home and kitchenware to gourmet food and wine. The Conrad Grand Ballroom will be packed to the brim with stalls, and shoppers also get to enjoy 15% off at the Garden Café (lunch and dinner) or the Lobby Lounge (lunch and afternoon tea).

Italian Christmas Market

QUICK: Saturday-Sunday, 9-10 December, 11AM-7PM
The Italian Market, Christmas edition will be up and running at PMQ for a weekend, featuring more than 15 Christmas-themed booths and Italian goodies to look forward to. The market is hosted by Bellissima Italian and the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and Macao.

Stanley Plaza Finnish Market

GOT TIME: Saturday-Sunday, 9-10 and 16-17 December, 12-8PM
The much-anticipated Stanley Plaza Christmas Market – and the plaza’s biggest event – is upon us, this weekend and next. This year, the Finnish-inspired shopping extravaganza will feature more than 80 stalls to shop at, and include a variety of Finnish grub: meatballs, reindeer sausages, herring and salmon, plus traditionally Joulutorttu, a pinwheel-shaped Finnish puff pastry served during Christmas. Stay long enough for the Christmas carols, and watch out for the glass igloo for a VR experience of the northern lights!

The Butchers Club’s Christmas Southside Market
GOT TIME: Sunday, 17 December, 12-4PM
Shop on a rooftop at The Butchers Club’s spot in Wong Chuk Hang, which will be transformed into a holiday of its own: live music, lawn games, a holiday jumper contest, artists painting faces and pasting temporary tattoos will coincide with all the shopping to be done. Stalls by books and kitchenware sellers, as well as Hong Kong-based brands will be on site. For the kids, Little Picasso Studio is also holding some arts and crafts workshops. The best part in all of this: the long lunch buffet to be had with all the food stalls.
