Slide on 79: chic sports bar thats hits all our S

You think of a sports bar and what comes to mind is a big screen displaying the latest sporting events, rowdy fans cheering their favourite team, lots of cheap drinks and barely average quality food. But Slide on 79 proved us wrong.

We made our way onto the busy Wyndham street during lunchtime to try a few dishes at the restaurant. As we entered the restaurant, we were a bit irked by the deafening construction noises right across the narrow street, but as soon as the doors closed the noise disappeared. We were quickly distracted by the casual and lively atmosphere of the dining area with nifty pop art and geometric shapes with bright colours on the walls. On one side of the wall was a large projector screen playing a live baseball game. The bar was notably elegant, especially for a sports bar, with dark a marble countertop and deep teal bar stools.

Although we wanted to try every slider on the menu, we managed to narrow it down to a few choices. The one we were most excited to try was the Russian Kotlety, and it did not disappoint. The thin strips of chicken breast, mashed potatoes, cheese and green chillies merged together extremely well and created a distinctive and flavorful patty. The Po’ Boy, made with chunks of fresh prawn and the regular burger toppings is a surefire way to please any seafood lover.

We were impressed by the availability of veggie options on the slider menu- half of the menu is catered to vegetarians! We decided to try the Suzie Q simply because we thought that chickpeas, cheese and jalapeno would make a killer combo and we weren’t wrong. The flavors came together so beautifully that even a strictly meat lover would thoroughly enjoy it!

The star of our slider selection was the Aroy Aroy!, a Thai style minced fish burger with lemongrass, kaffir lime, sweet chili sauce, lettuce, onion and tomato. The flavors of lemongrass and kaffir lime hit you right away followed by the freshness of the fish and the savouriness of the sauce. Read more about this amazing slider here!

After we had our fill of sliders, we decided to try the spaghetti bolognaise, which came highly recommended by the manager. The thinner than usual pasta noodles and the homemade sauce that truly tastes as though it’s prepared by a grandma made this dish a true highlight.

The dessert of the day was chocolate cake. While we appreciated the sweet taste of chocolate after the stunning combination of flavors we had tried, we thought the cake was a bit too firm and dense- almost like a leftover brownie.

The cocktails were simply ingenious. We tried Buddha’s Creation, a special cocktail created by Slide on 79’s very own bartender, Buddha. Made with single malt, apple, basil, lemon, cinnamon syrup and presented in a steel glass, this drink is mostly sweet with a hint of spice and tanginess. Since it was lunchtime, we thought what better drink than a bloody mary, so we tried the Slide On Mary. This bright red drink tastes like a heavenly mixture of tomatoes, lemon, vodka (and shh, a secret bloody mary mix!)

All in all, Slide on 79 checks all our boxes when it comes to being a sports bar. With an elegant yet playful vibe, a big screen showing high quality live sporting events, original and tasty cocktails, and luscious food that keeps you wanting more, Slide on 79 will make sure that you and your friends are in for a real treat!
