When it comes to Indian and Nepalese food, residents of Sheung Wan are spoilt for choice. And now a new Nepalese restaurant has entered the fray, opening on Queen’s Road Central. Named after one of the tallest and most hazardous mountain massifs in the world, we were expecting at least a bit of excitement from Annapurna.

In truth, with Chautari Restaurant and Namaste Kitchen - two of WOM’s favourite Indian restaurants - just around the corner, Annapurna needs to be something truly special to win a place in the hearts of locals, let alone to tempt visitors to the area into parting with their cash. We chose a main course that included lentil dhal, lamb tarkari and steamed rice, which adds up to a pretty substantial meal. Unfortunately the flavour hardly blew us away. And with the one course plus a mango smoothie coming to HK$249 after service, the price seems as steep as a Nepalese mountain.

Annapurna’s menu does include an impressive-looking list of house cocktails, so we may give Annapurna a second chance and test these out. But, the food falls just short of reaching the summit.
