Moreish American nosh at new restaurant Alvy's

A rising star in the thriving restaurant scene of Kennedy Town, Alvy’s takes inspiration from Hong Kong’s east-meets-west culture in showcasing old-school New York food traditions with a touch of everyday Hong Kong flavours. The Craft Beer Bar Pizzeria gives vibes of a classic New York City Neighbourhood bar with a selection of exclusive American whiskies and local beers from the Young Master Brewery. Beers on tap at Alvy’s come in four sizes, a very thoughtful service for those who want a light night. We ordered the Young Master’s Hak Mo Sheung (bourbon barrel aged imperial stout with roasty, silky notes of dark chocolate, and oak and vanilla) and absolutely loved it. We began our meal with two iconic American noshes of latkes and meatballs, all of which came with a little pleasant surprise. Sitting on a light layer of sour cream, the golden brown Latkes were topped with char siu cubes and geung yeong (ginger paste), adding complexity to the classic deli dish without over greasing it. Their Meatballs in Sunday Sauce were made from a mix of pork, chuck and veal meat -- ultra tender with a satisfying hearty bite.

The signature sourdough based pizzas arrived next. We tried the Bak Gwei (char siu and geung yeong on a cheesy Gruyere Bechamel white sauce base) and Ma-La-Di-Da (salumi piccante, ‘nduja and spicy bocconcini mozzarella), a harmonious flavour creation that was amazingly fragrant. At Alvy’s, they develop their sourdough starter following Young Master Brewery’s sour beer program, which gives their pizza crust that extra chewy and airy texture. Chic and cosy, Alvy’s is the perfect chillout spot for large groups and families. Their mini dinosaur toys lying around should keep the little ones busy for a while.
