When it comes to eco-friendly beauty, the skincare industry has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time, with a range of different plant-based brands now on the market. And when it comes to products that are equally good for you and the planet, Hong Kong isn’t lacking. From GMO-free treatments to sensitive skin-friendly, here’s our pick of animal product-free brands you can get your hands on.
Founded by professional makeup artist Annie Tevelin in 2013, SkinOwl’s range of products are 100 percent vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free and gluten-free. Only made with clean and non-toxic ingredients, Tevelin’s formulas are free of parabens, aluminium, animal oils and fats, lead, chloride, mercury and mineral oils. To minimise the brand’s carbon footprint, 95 percent of packaging materials are recycled.
Since 1987, proud Melbourne brand Aesop has made a name for itself as a luxury skincare line. A combination of synthetic ingredients and botanicals are used in Aesop products but they are free of colourants, mineral oils, silicones and parabens. Completely animal testing-free, their plant-based and laboratory-validated formulas are designed to suit every climate, living environment and skin texture.
Indian plant-based beauty brand Uma offers beauty and wellness products formulated to combat commonly faced (pun intended) skin issues. Free of toxic preservatives, parabens, GMOs, and mineral oils, Uma formulas are made with all-natural fragrances and organic ingredients sourced from the founder’s estate in the heavily forested eastern state of Chhattisgarh. Made by women for women, local villagers make up half of the company’s workforce, while one-third of all profits help local villagers gain access to healthcare.
Specialising in all-natural and organic formulas for skin rejuvenation, Herbivore Botanicals offers a line of products made from plant-based, food-grade, cold-pressed oils and GMO-free soy wax, which are also free of parabens, fillers and mineral oils. Formulated to suit different skin types, Herbivore’s highly concentrated yet cruelty-free treatments are also laced with steam-distilled essential oils for therapeutic benefits. A plus for Mother Earth, Herbivore also uses recyclable and reusable packaging to minimise its carbon footprint.
Best known for their Refuse to Use List, a list of over 2,700 ingredients commonly found in everyday products that are toxic to both people and the environment, US-based skincare brand Derma E, founded in 1984, is one of the largest global natural beauty brands, offering products that are 100 percent vegan, GMO-free and cruelty-free. Stock your bathroom cabinet with their facial toners, renewing moisturisers, age-defying eye creams, treatment serums and even charcoal masks rich in antioxidants, vitamins and botanicals that improve overall skin health.
Designed for people with sensitive skin, all Pai products are made with high-grade organic ingredients, and are free of animal by-products, synthetic ingredients and irritants like parabens, alcohol and detergents. Also catering to varying skin concerns and issues, the London-based label carries different product ranges that are specifically formulated for acne-prone, eczema, rosacea and psoriasis.
They may be better known for budget-friendly makeup but American beauty brand Elf have made a name for themselves thanks to planet and animal-friendly skincare. Free of phthalates, parabens and sulfates, all Elf products are 100 percent vegan and cruelty-free, designed to tackle skin issues such as dark circles, enlarged pores and dry skin. A premium range is also available for skin nourishing and improving elasticity.
