A bit of sad news this week: Hong Kong may be slowly making its way to recovery when it comes to the impact of COVID-19 but unfortunately, it isn’t the case for our F&B industry friends on the other side of the globe.

In light of the coronavirus outbreak, WOM favourite and the creative force behind Momofuku restaurant group David Chang took to Instagram to deliver the devastating news.

“Really hard day. Closing @momolongplay Nishi and CCDC and moving Ssäm Bar. Agonized over a million possible scenarios... at the end of the day, this was the only viable option.” the restauranteur shares. After five years in the business, Momofuku CCDC, the group’s largest venture at Chang’s hometown in Vienna will be closing its doors. Korean-Italian go-to Nishi at Chelsea in Manhattan while longstanding East Village spot Ssäm Bar is relocating to South Street Seaport after 15 years.

According to an official statement from Momofuku, “this crisis has exposed the underlying vulnerabilities of our industry and made clear that returning to normal is not an option,”. The announcement has taken the world by surprise but the global F&B scene is undoubtedly a tough market right now.

On a lighter note, Chang shares that all of his teams are being taken care of despite the major changes. Our hearts go out to the staff in front and behind the scenes at Momofuku.

See David Chang’s full statement on his Instagram post or tune into his podcast, The Dave Chang Show as where he sat with Marguerite Mariscal of Momofukuhe to share their experience of closing down restaurants during the pandemic.

This a tough time for anyone right now but we can’t wait to see what David Chang will be cooking up next.
