Cheung Chau's craziest and most popular annual event, the Cheung Chau Bun Festival is back from 9-13 May. As in past years the cultural festival, with Taoist roots, is expected to attract thousands of visitors to the small island. There will be signature red and white steamed buns everywhere, plus street food stalls, festival lanterns, celebratory structures, parades, lion dances and live performances, plus of course the infamous bun race.

For those that may be new to Hong Kong, the iconic Bun Scrambling Competition involves participants scrambling up a 60-foot bamboo tower covered with steamed buns. Don’t forget to try the buns, with bakeries all over the island selling these steamed treasures filled with the traditional lotus paste to more modern variations of sweetened bean and sesame.

Do remember that the entire island will go vegetarian during the festival, including McDonald’s!
