Why Gaggan won't be winning first place at Asia's 50 Best Restaurants this year

In 2016, chef Gaggan Anand first announced that Gaggan, his eponymous Indian restaurant in Bangkok, that has held the number one spot on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list for four consecutive years, would be closing its doors in 2020. He is planning to open a 10-seat restaurant, GohGan, in Fukuoka, Japan in 2021.

While we may be as surprised as last year, when the restaurant won again, it seems highly likely that a new number one will be announced on 26 March in Macau at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2019 awards.

Will the best restaurant in Japan, Den, finally top the charts with Gaggan gone? Or will we see a newcomer rise the ranks? We think the hottest one to watch is JL Studio from Taiwan. While here in Hong Kong, we are keeping an eye on our own frontrunners Caprice, 8 ½ Otto e Mezzo Bombana, and Ronin.
