5 warm desserts to sweeten the cold snap this week

You’re a serious sweet-tooth but you can’t bring yourself to shamelessly pick up an ice cream cone at this under-10-degree weather? This week’s cold snap has really got us hungry, so we’re looking for something sweet, something deliciously guilty (and carbolicious) to keep us satisfied. Here are our top picks for the most delicious, guiltiest, most carb-loaded warm desserts we could find.

OKRA is a pretty seductive place in the winter season. There's something about the tiny eatery, warmly lit and plonked in the middle of an urban landscape like a secret - it’s the perfect escape on colder evenings. The Uji matcha cookie boy is another escape on its own. An OKRA x COOKIE BOY collaboration featuring a warm gooey mess in a clay pot, the dish is smothered with smoked cream, lemon salt, and caramelised red beans. At first glance, yes, it does look like a piece of toast. But it’s so, so much more. As part of Terroir Parisien’s exploration of iconic Parisien eats, this Nanterre brioche is based on an area in Paris with the same name. The Nanterre brioche is French toast meets creme-brulee, caramelisation on the outside and soft pillows on the inside. It comes with a rich vanilla ice cream scoop but we personally preferred the toast by itself. You’ve probably heard about how amazing and unique their desserts are. Is there anything that can’t get better with caramel? Limewood features hand-piped churros served with coconut ice cream and salty caramel. The churros are perfectly crunchy on the outside and not too greasy on the inside. We personally prefer it smothered with sugar and dipped in just the salty caramel alone. Sometimes you want to take a break from the ubiquitous Hong Kong-style egg tarts and go for the piping hot caramel-sweet Portuguese variety. Sweet custard is encased in a fluffy well-sweetened puff pastry and flambéed to caramel on the top. The most authentic of Portuguese egg tarts can be found in Macau Restaurant. There’s quite a few of them around Hong Kong but our favourite branch is at the Sheung Wan ferry terminal.
