WOM Budget Bites: back streets of Wan Chai edition
Date Published : 28 Jun 2018

This month we tasked ourselves to roam the back streets of Wan Chai and seek out the best bang-for-your-buck meals. So here are our top picks, all under $60.

Assorted raw fish sushi rice

We don’t know about you, but we constantly crave raw fish and sushi, so Ba Sushi is one of our go-to's. We’ve yet to try their sushi as we always go for the assorted raw fish sushi rice. Generously topped with salmon, crab meat, sakura shrimp, tobiko and tamago and served with miso soup and an ice cream mochi at the end, it’s a nutritious and well rounded meal for just $60. While the savoury pancake is an oft-seen street food in most cities in China, jian bing is surprisingly hard to find in Hong Kong. We stumbled across Yu Chu Jian Bing recently and promptly ordered the Beijing roast duck and the cumin lamb. Beijing roast duck jian bing is a classic, with the savoury duck meat and the hint of sweetness from the hoisin sauce, it’s a delicious, fail-safe combination. But it’s the cumin lamb jian bing that really stole our hearts. The aromatic spices filled the air as we watched our jian bing getting made and once it was in our hands, we demolished it in no time. Depending on your filling, their jian bing is priced around $24 to $39, and for an additional $18, you can turn it into a meal with a snack and a bottled drink. We usually go for the labelless soya milk that they serve. Yu Chu Jian Bing; Shop A, Wild Bell Building, 181 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai; 6824 1018;

Hainanese chicken rice
Pratunam is a takeaway spot serving only two specialities: Hainanese chicken rice and pork knuckle rice. It’s our go-to when we’re pinched on time. You order on the digital screen outside and one minute later... Boom! Your lunch box is ready. For only $50 you get a lot of chicken. The rice is fluffy with just the right amount of oil. The set comes with a refreshing home recipe, lemongrass barley water - it’s the perfect thirst quencher for summer. Pratunam; 148 Wan Chai Road, Wan Chai; 2658 0580;

Banh mi
We had a, “what do you mean it’s only $36?” moment when we discovered the Hawkr banh mi, especially since there are plenty in Wan Chai that cost double the price. The Hawkr banh mi ticks all the boxes for us. The baguette had a good crunch but wasn’t hard to chew. Packed with pork pate, sriracha, lemongrass mayo, Vietnamese ham, pickled carrots and daikon, this definitely hits the spot. Hawkr; various locations incl. Three Pacific Place, 1 Queen’s Road East, Wan Chai; 2566 6680;

Thai boat noodles
Thai boat noodles are all the rage these days, easily costing over $100. So when you find it for just $38, surely that’s too good to be true? Well, it’s a pretty flimsy attempt at authentic boat noodles, it’s really just cart noodles with a darker, slightly more flavourful broth. But considering that Hong Kong cart noodles cost over $50 nowadays, this is a steal. We wouldn’t recommend the beef brisket but there are 20 toppings to choose from, some of the most popular being pork knuckle, pig’s blood and pig intestines. Or play it safe and opt for lemongrass chicken wings and meatballs. Thai Po Po; 3 Triangle Street, Wan Chai; 2838 8726
