Where to find Southern comfort food in Hong Kong... mac'n'cheese! fried chicken!
Date Published : 03 Aug 2017

USA isn't just burgers, fries and pizza. Southern food (we're talking mac'n'cheese, buttermilk biscuits, hush puppies, grits, peach pie) is a centuries-old representative of the US that resulted from a variety of European, African and Native-American influences that blended together. It's fatty, carb-loaded, greasy and absolutely comforting. Here are some of the places in Hong Kong where you can find some of these Southern comforts.  The Cheesecake Factory
It’s been over three months since its opening and this place still requires you to wait two hours to get a seat. This American import serves up some Southern favourites including Chicken & Biscuits, Mac & Cheese and Fried chicken & Waffles. But considering the fact that their extensive menu also includes dishes from all over the US including tex- mex and orange chicken, we aren’t exactly sure if this counts in this list. But hey, it does have fried chicken & waffles, possibly the most soul-foody thing ever. Shop G102, G/F, Harbour City, Gateway Arcade, Kowloon, 2791 6628; thecheesecakefactory.hk
Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
Run, Forrest, Run! There are only a few of these Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurants outside the US, and Hong Kong’s one of them. Take a trip to The Peak and stop by for some soul grub. Here you’ll find all of them bayou goodness: shrimp buckets, mac’n’cheese , seafood hush pups, jambalaya and southern fried chicken, the whole shebang.   Stone Nullah Tavern
Fried chicken fanatics will love this one. They serve up southern fried chicken, mac’n’cheese and country fried tenderloin steak (with sausage gravy). BBQ ribs, pork cheek chilli and garlic mashed potatoes are other a la carte options to look forward to as well. Stone Nullah Tavern focuses on serving farm-to-table American fare in the style of a classic American tavern. 69 Stone Nullah Lane, Wan Chai, 3182 0128 ; stonenullahtavern.comMoonshine and Po Boys
The name is pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it? Po boys (of course), biscuits and gravy, apple and cabbage coleslaw, dirty rice jambalaya, baby back ribs, a ‘bayou bucket’ that comes with an assortment of seafood along with sweet corn on the cob, mac’n’cheese , catfish tacos, lobster gumbo, grits, the whole restaurant is brimmed with Southern comforts and vibes. G/F, No.4 Sun Street, Wan Chai, 2776 2668; moonshinepoboys.hk
CRFT PIT
Specialising in Southern US-style smoked meats and seafood, CRFT PIT is primarily a wholesaler but it's open for private bookings as well as for a BBQ brunch on Saturdays. For either, bookings are a must. Expect smoked ribs, juicy slow-cooked pork sliders, BBQ sandwiches, mac’n’cheese and the like. So Kansas doesn’t exactly count as “The South” but food-wise do we really care to debate? This tiny Kennedy Town joint is serving up some delicious Kansas-style beef and pork ribs that are slow-smoked in hickory and applewood. They come with a side of coleslaw and beef-fat skinny fries. Juicy, glistening and not overly sweet, remember this spot for your next rib fix. 1 Smithfield, Kennedy Town, 3956 4213; fb.com/theribcagehkThe Flying Pan
So this one’s a breakfast joint anyone’s familiar with. This iconic 24-hour brekkie joint serves up the same kind of greasy goodness and warm service one might find in a ubiquitous American diner in the South. We’re talking fluffy pancakes, kitchen sink omelettes, grits and biscuits & gravy. We warn you though, the portions here are HUGE, and while the food and venue aren't the classiest of breakfast spots, there’s a nostalgic charm that has kept this place alive for decades. G/F 9 Old Bailey Street, Central, Hong Kong, 2140 6333; the-flying-pan.com
