5 pizzas from around the world (right here in HK)
Date Published : 28 Aug 2017

Listen up pizza lovers! Put down your favourite slice, and try something a little different today. We tried pizzas inspired by pizzas from around the world and here are our thoughts.
Ma-La-Di-Da @Alvy’s

Alvy’s serves up some amazing sour-dough based pizzas including the Sichuan inspired Ma-La-Di-Da. The Ma-La-Di-Da comes with ma la tomato sauce (covered with sichuan chilli), salumi piccante, ‘nduja and spicy bocconcini mozzarella. The pizza was amazingly fragrant, and the flavours were harmonious. The pizza crust made with sour beer gave an extra chewy and airy texture. G/F, 8 Holland Street, Kennedy Town. 2312 2996; facebook.com/alvyshk
Char siu pizza @Cafe Deco

Char siu is Cantonese genius, so why not add it to pizza? Cafe Deco’s char siu pizza comes with mozzarella, charsiu, orange hoi-sin sauce, bell peppers, quail egg, cherry tomatoes, spring onions and sesame seeds. The pizza is a little less flavoursome than we would have wanted, and may benefit in a stronger sauce, more char siu, fewer tomatoes and more spring onions, but we still enjoyed it enough to take the leftovers home! Shop 3-4, G/F, Tower 125, 11 Po Yan Street, Sheung Wan, 2559 4100; cafedecogroup.com Schwarzwaelder Flammkuchen @Beerliner
Alright so this one isn't really a pizza, it doesn't usually come with tomato sauce or cheese, but Beerliner's version is closer to a pizza (it has cheese and it's cut into triangles!) so we will add it to the list! The flammkuchen is a German flatbread with salad toppings, something similar to what you might find in a light thin-crust pizza.  Beerliner’s signature flammkuchen comes with air-dried black forest ham, mushrooms, onions, pine nuts and arugula. Flammkuchen, in general, comes with a mountain of onions, but Beerliner’s version is more of a balance, with the arugula balancing out the grease. Shop G10, G/F, Site 4, Whampoa Garden, Hunghom, 2254 6178; fb.com/BeerlinerGermanBarAndRestaurant
Bulgogi beef with gold edge @Pizza Maru

The Koreans like their pizzas sweetened with a ‘gold-edge’ of sweet potato mousse and sweet cheese. Sounds a little odd, but give it a shot! This gold edge is an option available for certain pizzas in Pizza Maru. And what better to ring it around but around a bulgogi pizza. The bulgogi pizza comes with bulgogi, ham, mushrooms and tomato sauce. The ham seemed redundant and while the bulgogi itself was delicious, the gold edge was a little strange for us (maybe its better with another combination?) We warn you, it's super carb-heavy, so come hungry. Hysan Place, 13/F, 500 Hennessy Rd, Causeway Bay, 2318 1012; fb.com/pizzamaruhkSicilian deep-dish @Paisanos
The Sicilian deep-dish in Paisanos is an option for all their speciality pizzas. True to its Sicilian-American roots, its square shaped, deep-pan and crusty on the edges. It’s more like a Sicilian slice rather than the super saucy authentic Sicilian deep-dish, but it’s possibly the closest you can find in Hong Kong! We recommend getting the pepperoni or the cheese rather than any other toppings for this slice. And possibly some extra sauce or extra cheese.
