This one’s a new spot with a name that explains exactly everything you need to know. Situated on Second street in Sai Ying Pun, this new hotspot is serving up classic, hearty comfort food with amazing value. We’re talking about our favourite deep fried balls of beef ragout ( bitterballen ), crispy onion rings, meatballs in tomato sauce, clam linguini, full english breakfast, burgers and truffle flatbread pizzas. ‘Frank’ refers to Frank Minza, the same person who manoeuvred Foxglove, and “Frank’s Library” is his new venture with a personal twist. A new bar with closed curtains is bringing a rotating collection of 8 different whiskies & cognacs from Frank’s personal stash. Inspired by Frank’s travels, Frank’s Library will feature ‘Travel Diary Cocktails’, a regional collection that focuses on different travel locations. These include the ‘America’s Manhattan’ with leather-infused rye whiskey, maple syrup, sweet vermouth, fino dry sherry and cloves. The Lighthouse Bistro is a marine-inspired concept just opened in the beachy serene of Repulse Bay. Helmed by renowned chef Olivier Bellin, the Lighthouse Bistro showcases seafood dishes using the freshest of seasonal ingredients from sustainable sources and at an affordable price. Their “Raw Bar” features fresh sashimi options while their cooked menu features beachy & summery bites such as their crispy deep-fried octopus that comes with potato salad along with Bellin signatures such as the Boston Lobster Parmentier, roasted lobster in a rich lobster sauce. As the name suggests, HAWKR is inspired by the hawker food joints all over Southeast Asia. HAWKR is featuring Southeast Asian favourites from Malaysian curries to Vietnamese baguettes to wraps and coffees inspired by Southeast Asian flavours. In true hawker fashion, the joint will focus on grab-and-go style eating, perfect for busy professionals on the go. Salad lovers can enjoy HAWKR salad signatures that all come with in-house made dressings. These include the Vietnamese chicken cabbage salad, the rainbow peanut noodle salad and their Thai papaya salad (only HK$24!). For those who prefer warmer to-go dishes, the Penang meatball and the Songkhla vegetarian noodle soup is a good choice. Ying Jee Club
Woodsy and cosy, the dining room is newly-opened Ying Jee is a luxurious but familiar experience. Helmed by the same chef behind the two Michelin starred Duddells, Ying Jee Club is an extensive venture that showcases all-time dim sum favourites along with some new combinations such as spring rolls with crab and shrimp, vegetable dumplings with truffle and A9 Wagyu rice flour rolls. Queen’s Dining serves up Thai, Vietnamese and Southeast Chinese dishes all under one roof. To match its trio-cuisine concept the interior of the restaurant was carefully designed to represent a different culture in each corner of the restaurant. Their signatures include the stewed conpoy chicken in bittern sauce, salt and pepper prawns, cod fillet with caramelised walnuts and fried rice with sergestidae shrimps & diced seafood. Ana Ten
Casual and contemporary Japanese restaurant ANA Ten is opening up in Harbour City in early September. Expect teishoku, sushi, sashimi, donburi, yakimono, tempura, agemono, robatayaki, teppanyaki, contemporary dishes and cocktails inspired by Japanese folklore. If you’re looking for your next Japanese hotspot under the backdrop of the Victoria Harbour, Ana Ten might be your best bet this coming month. A new tandoor grill house is opening inspired by the spirit of post-colonial Pakistan and India. Co-founder Asim partners with Michelin-starred chef Palash Mitra to bring an authentic Indian experience that goes beyond curries. The name pays homage to The Punjab Club, a private social and athletic club of Lahore where Asim spent his childhood. Featuring the newly restored tandoor ovens from Asim’s father’s own Indian sub-continent restaurant that flourished for two decades during the 80s.  G/F, 34 Wyndham St, Central, 2368 1223;
Cali-mex Bar & Grill
Cali-mex Bar & Grill’s first flagship location just opened in Lan Kwai Fong. Expect Brooklyn-inspired furnishing, homely service and a self-serve beer wall with 6 draft options. The extensive menu at Cali-Mex grill & bar will feature comfort food favourites such as bbq baby back ribs, chicken parmigiana, chilli con Carne and their signature sizzling garlic chilli prawns served with warm tortilla triangles. Open from day to late night, here’s your new spot for all day eating: enjoy a breakfast burrito in the morning, beef tacos for lunch and craft beers in the evening. Set right around the corner from New Market Street, Sheung Wan, Mean Noodles is a newly opened hidden gem noodle bar, serving up traditional Southeast Asian noodles with a modern twist. Offering just five authentic noodle options including the Penang Hokkien Mee, Nyonya Laksa, Vietnamese Pho, Char Kuay Teow, and Thai Yen Ta Fo Heng, their menu may be limited but that’s always a sign that the food will be good. There is also available a selection of cold drinks to cool down after slurping some steamy spicy noodles, such as their homemade lemongrass soda, Malaysian Teh Tairk, and Ipoh White Coffee.
