Hottest new restaurants to try this May
Date Published : 26 Apr 2018

Another month, another slew of openings we're excited about. Here are the ones on our radar this May.

The first restaurant to open at H Queen’s, the gleaming new building on Central’s Queen’s Road, Arbor presents the cuisine of chefs Nicholas Boutin and Eric Räty, where French culinary techniques meet ingredients mainly sourced from Japan. Diners may opt for several menu options: tasting, omakase, and seasonal, for lunch and dinner, as well as pairings with wine from the restaurant’s 1,700-bottle-strong collection. 25/F, H Queen’s, 80 Queen’s Road Central; 3185 8388

Le Comptoir, the folks behind art-inspired Bibo have opened ÉCRITURE at H Queen’s. The fine dining restaurant likewise brings together French and Japanese cuisines presented by executive chef Maxime Gilbert, with options for a tasting menu and a lunch set, both featuring seasonal ingredients. Signatures include the Hokkaido Scallops contisée with Black Truffle cooked in a Crispy Beignet, while other dishes are the Raw Amaei Prawn Tail served with a delicate Red Onion Jelly and Beetroot Feuillantine, and Cauliflower and White Chocolate Mousse, with Schrencki Caviar. 26/F, 80 Queen's Road Central, Central; 9229 4627;

Spanish contemporary restaurant Elia is opening at Tsim Sha Tsui East, on the corner where Ra used to be. The nautical themed restaurant-bar – with interiors paying impressive attention to detail, from the paddle-decked ceilings to the bicycle-gear high chairs – features a menu of large and small tapas plates by Michelin star chef Miguel Lopez, along with a drinks menu designed by mixologist Alfredo Aguilera. Ebisoba Ichigen Wan Chai

The Sapporo ramen shop, best known for their shrimp-based ramen, has opened along Queen’s Road East in Hong Kong, serving ramen fans another option for their cravings. While the umami-filled customisable noodle bowls were great, we’re also pleasantly surprised by their shrimp rice balls. Shop B, 119 Queen’s Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong;

On Peel Street in Central, Pirata Group is opening Chifa, a Peruvian-Chinese restaurant inspired by Lima’s barrio Chino. It’s the first in Hong Kong to feature a melding of these cuisines, where Chinese cooking techniques are applied to Peruvian ingredients – with dumplings, noodles, rice, meats and seafood dishes on the menu for sharing. G/F, No.26 Peel Street, Central; 2311 1815;

New Japanese izakaya Fukuro is opening this May on Elgin Street, right next to sister restaurant Ho Lee Fook. Fukuro is Black Sheep Restaurant’s 18th opening, this time showcasing Tokyo’s izakaya culture of drinking and sharing plates. Chef Shun Sato, formerly of BELON and Ho Lee Fook, is leading the kitchen. Expect sashimi platters, grilled seafood, beers and whiskies. A dish we can’t wait to try? The A4 Wagyu sukiyaki topped with a cured egg yolk. 1-5 Elgin Street, SoHo; 2333 8841;

Flying Pig Deli

The two-year-old Flying Pig restaurant has recently opened Flying Pig Deli, a takeaway concept featuring burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, and a variety of small bites. Customers can pick up a chicken schnitzel sandwich – among others – at their Sai Ying Pun location on Centre Steet. 52-56 Centre Street, Sai Ying Pun; 2523 9698;

Beef & Liberty HKIA

Beef & Liberty has opened at Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1, now serving travellers their signature burgers, plus airport-exclusive menu items, as well as a self-service beer bar in collaboration with Moonzen Brewery. Unit 7E138, Departures East Hall, Terminal 1, Hong Kong International Airport
