The single's guide to dining on Valentine's Day
Date Published : 30 Jan 2018

Bouquets, chocolates, expensive dinners and teddy bears: if this is V-Day for the attached, surely independent spirits could easily do just as well better?

From quiz nights to partying the night in, here’s a bunch of dining hacks for the cheesy holiday as a single person, loud and proud.

Round up the troops for quiz night
Ring up single friends and form a team of six for Beef & Liberty’s Quiz Night on the eve of Valentine’s. It may be V-Day themed, but with amazing singles on your team you just might give the couples a run for their money. Participants get a full evening of happy hour, food, and prizes up for grabs. To register, email your team name, group size and contact number.
13 Feb, 7PM onwards at Beef & Liberty, 3/F California Tower, 30-32 D’Aguilar Street, Central; 2450 5733;

Milk Valentine's dinner packages - as singles

You can third wheel, or you can gather two other friends for CÉ LA VI’s ‘Seductive Seafood Menu’ – a Valentine’s dinner package that serves not only groups of two or four, but groups of three as well. (We're not sure why this exists, but with a price total for three people, we'll take it.) Each party in the group gets a serving of the sashimi and oyster platter, softshell crab, Angus beef striploin, and lychee Champagne mousse.
14 Feb at CÉ LA VI, 25/F California Tower, 30-32 D’Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong, Central; 3700 2300;

Or milk Anti-Valentine's Day menus, designed for the unattached in mind
Only on 14 February, Big Sur is serving up an ‘Anti-Valentine’s Day’ menu – an a la carte selection of grilled scallop tacos, charcoal grilled duck hearts with house made flour tortilla, smoked lamb spare ribs, and the Heart Attack Burger. Yes, it could be an a la carte menu for any other day, but that it's designed for singles should count for something, no?
Big Sur, G/F, 22 Staunton Street, Soho, Central; 2529 3001;

Or you know, why not go all out with Anti-Valentine's parties?

Of course, there’s no shame in celebrating Valentine’s as a single person, and options – ‘Anti-Valentine’s Parties’ – abound: Wahtiki Island Lounge is throwing a bash featuring three cocktails per person and a free flow of snacks, such as breaded Cajun chicken Goujons, roe-filled deep fried smelt fish, chilli and pepper coated squid, and Hokkaido cheese scalenes. Ophelia invites singles to come in smart attire to their second annual Anti-Valentine’s Party and anticipate cocktails and performances. Meanwhile at DiVino, DJ-spun jazz and a V-Day-themed aperitif spread await singles, while ladies get to leave with a lollipop and bon-bons. Vouchers to The Look Diary and prizes are also up for grabs.
Wahtiki Island Lounge ($500 per person, 6:30PM), 3/F, Seabird House, 22-28 Wyndham Street, Central; 2793 0308;
Ophelia (RSVP for complimentary admission; 6PM), 1/F, The Avenue, Lee Tung Avenue; 200 Queen's Rd East, Wan Chai;  2520 1117;
DiVino, Shop 1, Winsome House, 73 Wyndham Street, Central; 2167 8883;

Don't forget, you can always bring the party where the heart is: home
It's a luxury known to single and couples alike: the fabled, uninterrupted Me-time. In a way, singles get the upper-hand on Valentine's, unobligated to participate in the billion-dollar holiday and instead free to spend the night as they wish. Over Netflix, or a round of Cards Against Humanity with friends, Wine Moments’ Anti-Valentine’s Day Box might be the perfect match for the evening. Inside is a bottle of red (a blend from La Maîtresse from Domaine La Louviere), rosé (Rotten Roses rosé from Zio Porco Wines), and sparkling wine (Sylvester Secco from Weingut Hinterbichler) to last all evening in. The free delivery doesn't hurt either.
